Russel attended San Fernando Boys RC School, then St. Thomas Aquinas High School. At St. Thomas Aquinas he never had an art teacher but this never bothered him for he knew he had a gift and did not need any formal training in painting, the necessary skills came naturally to him. He found himself becoming more serious in art when he was loyally supported by many indulgent friends and a school teacher who bought his first painting. He participated in the Caribbean Art Community Exhibition of Fine Arts, which moved throughout Trinidad in 1988. In 1989, Russel received a certificate in recognition of the High Standard of Achievements by the Society of Young Artists. His first one-man exhibition was held in connection with the celebration of the City of San Fernando at the re-opening of Naparima Bowl.
